Honoring the Virgin Mary at Loreta Prague
Honoring the Virgin Mary at Loreta Prague
A visit to the Loreta shrine is a highlight of any Prague vacation. This shrine, a marvel of Baroque architecture, has been drawing pilgrims since 1626. Today, it is home to a large collection of religious artifacts including a diamond monstrance with 6,200 precious stones and a famous recreation of the house of the Virgin Mary.
Most visitors probably come to Loreta to visit the Virgin Mary, or at least the small ebony statue representing her. According to legend, the Virgin Marys house in Nazareth in 1278 was miraculously transported by angels to Loreto in Italy.
The Loreta shrine in Prague includes its own replica of the Virgin Marys relocated house. Known here as the Santa Casa, the reproduction even includes a beam and bricks from the Virgins original home.
